KY Gov. Andy Beshear to hold Harris fundraiser in Chicago as VP decision nears
Gov. Andy Beshear will be in Chicago on Monday to raise money for Kamala Harris, regardless of whether he’s tapped to be her running mate.
Dubbed “A Reception with Gov. Andy Beshear,” the event is scheduled just as the race for the vice presidential nomination comes to a close. Harris is to make a prime-time appearance Tuesday with her new running mate at a Philadelphia rally.
Beshear is one of six Democratic contenders being vetted by the Harris team to join the ticket. An announcement of the selection could come as early as this weekend.
The Beshear fundraising event is being hosted by Christie Hefner, the daughter of Playboy Magazine founder Hugh Hefner and Fay Hartog-Levin, a former U.S. ambassador to the Netherlands.
Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, another vice presidential contender, is hosting a similar fundraising event in Minneapolis on Monday, as first reported by The New York Times.
The fundraising push is a coordinated effort by the Harris campaign to wring as much money out of the intrigue that pervades the vice presidential selection process. The Harris campaign announced a record month for fundraising in July, netting $310 million; the Trump campaign raked in $139 million over the same stretch.
The 46-year-old Beshear has kept a highly active political schedule since Harris announced her candidacy on July 21. He’s made stops in Iowa, Georgia and Oklahoma, raising money for local Democrats and attacking the Republican presidential ticket.
Still, as a governor of a ruby red state, Beshear remains an underdog for Kamala’s No. 2 slot, with Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly positioned as the leading contenders largely due to their battleground state roots.
All that’s left to know is who will be joining her on the stage in Philadelphia Tuesday.
