Broken promises, broken dreams, broken furniture: The nightmare of unscrupulous movers

Here are some things to consider when hiring a moving company:

Get a written estimate. The estimate should be based on an in-person examination. It should be signed by both the company and the customer.

If it is an interstate move, make sure the mover is registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, part of the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Check the mover’s history with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services license/complaint lookup.

Make sure the moving company doesn’t add a substantial surcharge for payment by credit card.

To minimize costs and hassles, late May through August is a busy time for moving companies, so it’s best, if possible, to schedule a move during spring or late fall. Weekend rates tend to be highest, both for truck rental agencies and moving companies.
