Clinton campaign hires student organizer from Sanders operation
Days after locking in the Democratic presidential contest, Hillary Clinton is already moving to increase her appeal with young voters who have so far failed to get excited about her candidacy.
The Clinton campaign is hiring the director of student organizing from Democratic rival Bernie Sanders’ operation, hoping to the move will help convert his energized young base, who have preferred Sanders by large margins in primary contests, into Clinton supporters.
According to Politico, Kunoor Ojha, who was a field organized for President Barack Obama in 2008, will be Clinton’s national campus and student organizing director. She is the first Clinton hire from the Sanders operation and will work with the Clinton campaign’s state team in outreach efforts to young voters.
Clinton on Tuesday amassed enough delegates to be declared the presumptive Democratic nominee, but Sanders has said he will fight on until the party’s convention in July. Sanders met with Obama at the White House Thursday, and shortly after their meeting the president formally endorsed Clinton. The former secretary of state has earned other endorsements since becoming the presumptive nominee, including that of Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., a progressive who could help convince Sanders supporters to vote for Clinton.
It is unclear what sort of role Sanders will play in the Democratic campaign moving forward, and if or how he’ll work to convert his galvanized base into Clinton voters to defeat presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump.
