Donald Trump tweets ‘I love Hispanics’ for Cinco de Mayo

Twitter

One day after becoming the virtually assured Republican nominee, Donald Trump tried to appeal to Hispanic voters with a Cinco de Mayo themed post Thursday.

The businessman tweeted a photo of himself eating a taco bowl in what appeared to be his Trump Tower office. “Happy #CincoDeMayo! The best taco bowls are made in Trump Tower Grill. I love Hispanics!” he wrote.

The entree appeared to be from the Trump Tower Cafe, listed as a “Taco fiesta!” with “ground sautéed beef with jalapeños, onions, tomatoes, and chili spice, served in a taco shell topped with lettuce and cheddar cheese” and priced at $13.50.

Trump wasn’t the only politician celebrating the holiday. House Republicans tweeted:

The White House also recognized Cinco de Mayo:

The holiday itself actually has American roots. Cinco de Mayo recognizes the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla, which Mexico won against France in 1862.

Trump has been criticized for his past comments on Mexican immigrants and for his proposal to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexican border. He accused Mexican immigrants of being "rapists" and "bringing crime" into the United States while announcing his presidential bid last June and has repeatedly promised to make Mexico pay for a border wall despite controversy over its cost and effectiveness.
