Commentary: It's now time to leave Afghanistan

Like the Kennedy assassination and Sept. 11 itself, a lot of Americans will remember where they were, who they were with and what they were doing one Sunday night in May when the news came down.

Osama bin Laden has been killed.

We think that if President Obama has good instincts, he'll use this moment to begin a swift withdrawal from Afghanistan, cut funding to Pakistan, wrap up the remnants in Iraq, and, in so many words, say to Karzai, Zardari and al-Maliki: "We win. Good luck. Goodbye."

Four thousand-plus American combat deaths and tens of thousands of wounded warriors later, we think we've shown the world we go to the brink for honor.

We think we've hardened our security to where terrorists can't project power here, in any serious way. We'll take some hits from local cells, but nothing on a big scale.
