The good news regarding the case of Khalid Ouazzani, the Moroccan-born Kansas City resident, is that he was caught.
But beyond that, his story raises concerns. While living in Kansas City, Ouazzani pledged allegiance to the terror group al-Qaida, talked with others about joining the fight in Afghanistan, Iraq or Somalia — and sent the tidy sum of at least $23,500 to Osama bin Laden.
Authorities say the net closed in on him before he could become a threat to local residents. U.S. Attorney Beth Phillips says: "At no point did Ouazzani present an imminent risk of harm to our community."
While Ouazzani was aiding al-Qaida, he was involved in an elaborate bank fraud scheme in which he bought foreclosed property on the cheap, took out home equity loans on the properties and then defaulted.
