Commentary: Congress shouldn't join in 'birther' conspiracy theory

We recognize anyone can get a good conspiracy theory going on the Internet. There are enough members of the lunatic fringe to breathe life into just about any eccentric claim you want to make.

So if it were just anonymous bloggers talking to themselves about President Obama's “fake” birth certificate, we wouldn't waste time weighing in.

But when members of Congress passively or actively further the inane rantings of conspiracy theorists, we can stand it no more. They are being downright un-American to suggest that Obama wasn't born in America, or to silently allow others to suggest that.
