Lara Trump says president is in a ‘great mood’ and impeachment is energizing his base
Lara Trump says her father-in-law, President Donald Trump, has been “in a great mood,” despite an upcoming vote in the House of Representatives on Wednesday that is expected to make him only the third president to be impeached in American history.
“I don’t think any of this has impacted him in the way that I think the Democrats would like to see it happen. He has been in a great mood, as far as I’ve seen him — the several times that I’ve seen him over the past several weeks,” she said in an interview with McClatchy.
Lara Trump is married to the president’s son, Eric, and spoke by phone from New York City, where the couple lives, on Wednesday afternoon while the House of Representatives debated two articles of impeachment.
“For all of us in the family and in the campaign, we know that this is so partisan. This is a political impeachment. This is not reality that the Democrats are operating in right now,” she said.
Lara Trump, a senior adviser to the Trump campaign, said donations have increased since the impeachment proceedings began. She said internal polling supports the campaign’s claims that impeachment is not harming the Republican president’s reelection bid.
“With the numbers that we have internally with our polling, this kind of thing is really only helping the president as we go into 2020,” she said. “It is invigorating the people that voted for him in 2016.”
She added: “We really feel good as we head in 2020.”
President Trump described impeachment as an “ASSAULT ON AMERICA” and the Republican Party in a tweet on Wednesday.
On the eve of the impeachment vote, he sent House Speaker Nancy Pelosi a six-page letter calling the proceedings an “attempted coup” and comparing them to the “Salem Witch Trials.”
Trump urged Pelosi to “immediately cease this impeachment fantasy” and get back to work on legislation. “While I have no expectation that you will do so, I write this letter to you for the purpose of history and to put my thoughts on a permanent and indelible record,” he said.
“I think it was great that he sent her a letter and outlined his position on everything and told her and everyone else why this impeachment is complete nonsense and it’s awful for the country,” Lara Trump said. “Good for him for standing up and voicing his opinion on this.”
