Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe under investigation for campaign contributions
Virginia Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe is being investigated for potential violations of campaign law dating back to his 2014 campaign, according to a report by CNN.
The FBI and the public integrity unit of the Justice Department are looking into whether the campaign accepted illegal donations.
The governor’s campaign said he would cooperate with a probe, but had not previously been notified McAuliffe was under investigation. One donation of interest is $120,000 from a Chinese businessman, Wang Wenliang. The donations were allegedly made by Wang’s U.S. companies.
A lawyer for the McAuliffe campaign said the governor would cooperate with any investigation and said the campaign contributions from Wang were “completely lawful.”
