A volunteer for Ben Carson’s presidential campaign in Iowa died Tuesday after an auto accident on an icy road in western Iowa, according to a statement released by the campaign.

Braden Joplin, 25, died around 4:30 P.M. local time. Three other passengers in the van were treated and released from a hospital in Atlantic. Braden was taken to Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha with serious injuries.

The van, driven by a staffer for the retired neurosurgeon, who is competing for votes in the Feb. 1 Iowa Republican caucus, was carrying the four passengers when it flipped on its side and was struck by another vehicle.

Carson was in South Carolina. He immediately suspended his campaign events and planned to arrive in Omaha, where Joplin died at Nebraska Medical Center, later Tuesday. He plans to meet with Joplin’s family to offer condolences, the campaign statement said.
