Chris Christie’s never been so unpopular back home.
A new Quinnipiac University poll released Monday four the New Jersey governor got a 56 percent job disapproval rating, and a 38 percent approval rating, from state voters. That’s his worst showing ever – and the worst showing for any governor this year in the nine states the survey polls.
Christie, governor since January 2010, is weighing a bid for the Republican presidential nomination, and got a decent response last week when he campaigned in New Hampshire, the nation’s first primary state.
But back home, "The governor's job approval hits a new low and voters think his presidential ambitions are distracting him from his day job. Besides, they don't think he'd be a good president,” said Maurice Carroll, assistant poll director.
They do see Christie as a strong leader, by a 63-33 percent margin. But 41 percent say he’s honest and trustworthy. Barely one-third approve of his handling of the economy, jobs and education.
And most don’t want him to run for president. By a 65-29 margin, they say he won’t make a good president. Fifty-five percent said his campaign is distracting him from his job.
Should Democrats nominate former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, she’d probably win big. The poll found she had a 51-36 percent lead.
