Top Scott Walker aide Liz Mair quit his team after a day on the job after controversy erupted over some Twitter posts, according to Associated Press.
Mair, a veteran Republican consultant, was to head the Wisconsin governor’s online operations. Walker is considered one of the Republicans’ top potential 2016 presidential candidates.
But late Tuesday, she said, “The tone of some of my tweets concerning Iowa was at odds with that which Gov. Walker has always encouraged in political discourse.”
She stirred controversy with her tweets. In January, she tweeted, “Morons across America are astounded to learn that people from *IOWA* grow up rather government-dependent. #agsubsidies #ethanol #brainless.”
A few days later, she had sharp criticism of the Iowa Freedom Caucus, an all-day event with 1,000 Republican activists and a parade of Republican presidential hopefuls. Walker stood out that day, and got a big boost.
“In other news, I see Iowa is once again embarrassing itself, and the GOP, this morning. Thanks, guys,” Mair said.
Associated Press reported that Iowa Republican Chairman Jeff Kaufmann was outraged, quoting him as calling her remarks “juvenile,” “naive” and “ignorant.”
