The convention hangover has set in. And as is the case with hangovers, you wanna just sit still and figure out what happened.
Here’s what I’m sorting out about this week at the DNC:
What I realized: A temporary Transit Center isn’t a change if you’ve never been to the Transit Center. The bus costs $2, they don’t have change for a five, and the catering truck makes the best black-bean burgers. And the onsite ambassadors at the temporary location are the nicest, most organized and informed people I met all week. GO CATS!
What I’ll miss: Every parking garage being secure. Every square inch of the city being secure. The specials board at the BlackFinn Saloon reading “Up Next, Madeleine Albright.” Free coffee. Saying things like “I’m standing next to Geraldo,” and receiving texts that say, “getting my picture taken with Jon Stewart.” Uptown WiFi. Barricades – they keep all the cars out. Hearing “Good morning, welcome, can I help you?” And getting emails from Barack Obama.
What I won’t miss: People complaining that the sand castle replica of President Obama doesn’t look exactly like President Obama. Of course, it doesn’t – it’s SAND! Traffic pattern maps. Weather being breaking news. Wearing a lanyard credential as an accessory. Trying to figure out if someone is Secret Service or just listening to their iPod. Looking for George Clooney. And getting emails from Barack Obama.
Who knew? That the EpiCentre doubles as a television network, the arena doubles as a convention center, and soccer moms double as security. That Jeff Bridges likes white Russians before 9 … a.m. That protesters could get so much time off work. And that Beau Bridges was here too.
What I’m confused about: People who live here not wanting to take part in volunteering, witnessing, partying, or in any way participating in such a fun and exciting event. That’s pretty much all I’m confused about.
What I’m not confused about: How to get around uptown. Those traffic pattern maps are burned on my brain. And thanks to the MSNBC Experience at the EpiCentre, I’m ready to have the Whiskey River Experience, the StrikeCity Experience, the Mez Experience, the…
I’ve so enjoyed the DNC. It’s been a great week. Such an amazing event for this incredible city.
