‘Squad’ member headed to SC to campaign for 2020 hopeful
As U.S. senators gear up to spend time at the Capitol, serving as jurors in the President Donald Trump impeachment trial, 2020 hopefuls are sending surrogates out to campaign for them.
U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s campaign is sending U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass. — a member of the so-called “squad” — to campaign in South Carolina.
Pressley — who broke with the other three members of the so-called “squad” of young, liberal congresswoman to endorse Warren, a fellow Democrat from Massachusetts — will be visiting the Palmetto State on Friday to participate in a weekend of action, according to a statement from the campaign.
Pressley’s travel stops have not been released publicly yet, and a campaign spokesperson was not immediately available Tuesday.
The visit will mark Pressley’s first trip to South Carolina as part of the campaign.
Pressley and other Warren surrogates will represent the Massachusetts senator while she is tied up with impeachment proceedings.
Pressley, a freshman and the first woman of color elected to represent Massachusetts in Congress, endorsed Warren in November, even though the other members of “the squad” — which includes Democratic U.S. Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilham Omar and Rashida Talib — endorsed U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, of Vermont, in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Pressley was named the co-chair on the Warren campaign.
