It’s rare for Democrats and Republicans to attend the same Washington fundraiser.
But politics will be cast aside and House Assistant Democratic Leader James Clyburn, D-S.C., and Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., will make remarks Wednesday at a Washington event to support the families of the nine victims murdered in Charleston’s Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church last month.
The South Carolina Business Council and the South Carolina State Society is hosting the event from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at 101 Constitution Ave., NW., to give transplanted South Carolinians a chance to grieve as well as help the family of the fallen.
The nine victims – including pastor and South Carolina State Sen. Clementa Pinckney – were fatally shot during a bible study session inside the historic Charleston church. Dylann Storm Roof, 21, was charged in connection with the massacre that law enforcement officials say was racially-motivated.
