Sen. Bernie Sanders will announce he is running for president on Thursday, a source close to the lawmaker said Tuesday.
The independent from Vermont will run as a Democrat. The only other announced candidate is Hillary Clinton, though former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley is expected to run as well.
Sanders, 73, has been considering a presidential bid for months. News reports indicate that he will release a statement Thursday and then hold a more formal campaign kickoff event in the coming weeks.
Sanders, a self-described socialist who caucuses with Democrats in the Senate, has tried to push Clinton the left. He opposes to the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal and fast-track authority and has embraced tighter Wall Street regulation.
