Hillary Clinton, the presumed frontrunner for the Democratic nomination for president, urged Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R) to veto a “religious freedom” bill that is similar to an Indiana law which is seen by many as allowing discrimination against gays and lesbians.
Clinton tweeted her message Wednesday just before Hutchinson told reporters that he would not sign the Religious Freedom Restoration Act because it does not mirror a federal law enacted while Clinton’s husband was president.
“Like IN law, AR bill goes beyond protecting religion, would permit unfair discrimination against #LGBT Americans,” she wrote. “I urge Governor to veto.”
Clinton tweeted last week after Indiana Gov. Mike Pence (R) signed a bill that protects companies and individuals from government actions that would substantially burden religious practices.
“Sad this new Indiana law can happen in America today. We shouldn't discriminate against ppl bc of who they love #LGBT” she tweeted.
Pence has since asked for the law to be changed.
Clinton moved to Arkansas in 1974 and remained there until Bill Clinton was elected president in 1992. Depsite the history, she would have a tough time winning the state, though he remains popular. Bill Clinton campaigned for Hutchinson’s opponent, Democrat Mike Ross, in 2014.
