Is Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, going to get the jump on the presidential field?
Several news outlets were reporting late Friday that Cruz will give an “important” speech Monday at Liberty University, a conservative Christian institution in Lynchburg, Va. founded by the late Rev. Jerry Falwell. Cruz staffers would not respond to requests for comment from McClatchy about the nature of the speech but said it was a speech “you should cover if you can.” The Daily Beast website reported that a Cruz aide said “you’re going to want to be there.”
It is not clear if Cruz would announce an exploratory committee or his candidacy before what will surely be an enthusiastic audience of young evangelicals.
Cruz has been actively exploring a presidential run for 2016 and last weekend was in the early voting states of South Carolina and New Hampshire. He finished the swing with an appearance Monday on NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers.”
Cruz is giving the convocation, a weekly speech, according to the Liberty University website, before 10,000 students. Cruz gave a convocation speech last year as did his father Rafael Cruz, a preacher.
Among the leading potential presidential candidates, only Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., has set a “save the date” event, April 7 in Louisville, when he will announce his plans.
