House Majority Leader Eric Cantor Tuesday lost his Republican primary Tuesday in a stunning upset, defeated by more conservative challenger Dave Brat.
Cantor, R-Va., is the highest-ranking member of Congress in years to lose re-nomination. He had been seen as the frontrunner to become Speaker of the House if current Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, steps down.
Cantor was once viewed as the leader of the House of Representatives’ more conservative faction, but had softened over the past few years.
