Iowa's Republican party chairman will leave his post later this month and become an adviser to Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul's political action committee.
A.J. Spiker, who heads the GOP in the state that traditionally holds the nation's first presidential caucus, will join RANDPAC.
Paul is seen as a potentially strong contender in Iowa. His father, former Texas Rep. Ron Paul, had a sizeable following when he ran for president. He finished third in 2012's caucuses with 21 percent.
Spiker has been a controversial figure in Iowa Republican circles. He headed Ron Paul's 2012 campaign, and often clashed with "establishment" Republicans.
