President Obama travels to a grocery store distribution center outside Washington today to highlight the administration's plans to improve the fuel efficiency of American trucks.
The White House says Obama will direct the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Transportation to develop and issue the next phase of medium- and heavy-duty vehicle fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas standards by March 2016.
He's also partnering with private-sector leaders to deploy advanced vehicles and calling on Congress "to take steps to expand fuel choices for American drivers," the White House says, contending the steps would "help bolster American energy security, cut carbon pollution, save money, and support manufacturing innovation."
Obama will speak at a Safeway distribution center. The White House says the grocery chain "has been a leader in improving trucking efficiency." It participates in EPA's SmartWay public-private partnership and has improved the efficiency of its trucking fleet by investing in cleaner, more efficient trucks and trailers, with improved aerodynamics, more efficient tires and larger capacity trailers.
