Is Chris Christie's political luster fading?
A new Pew Research Center survey released Monday found his explanation of George Washington Bridge closings, detailed at his Jan. 9 news conference, "is drawing skepticism."
Pew reported " Most of those who have heard about the controversy do not believe Christie’s assertion that he was not aware of his aides’ involvement in the lane closure."
The survey found 38 percent viewed the New Jersey governor favorably and 34 percent saw him unfavorably--twice as high as last January's reading. The survey was conducted Jan. 15-19.
Favorable views are largely unchanged.
Pew also noted that "Among those who have heard about the incident, 58 percent say they do not believe Christie when he said he had no knowledge of his aides’ involvement until it became public; 32 percent say they believe Christie’s assertion that he was unaware of his aides’ role."
Democrats have been hitting Christie hard, and it's helped rally party loyalists and independents.
Two-thirds of Democrats and three-fifths of independents who have heard at least something about Christie and the lane closures don't believe his statement he didn't know of their involvement.
About half of Republicans believe him.
