President Barack Obama will visit Pope Francis, Secretary of State John Kerry said after he stopped at the Vatican Tuesday.
"I know that the Holy Father is anticipating the visit of President Obama here, and the President is looking forward to coming here to meet with him," Kerry said in Rome.
White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters later that the two men plan to meet, but did not disclose details.
"The president looks forward to meeting with the pope in the near future," Carney said. "I do not have any more details for you on that -- timing or location -- except to say that the president very much looks forward to a meeting."
