President Obama is off to New York today for a trip that mixes business with politics.
Obama leaves DC to visit Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) in Brooklyn, where he'll tour a classroom and discuss "the importance of ensuring that the next generation of middle class American workers and entrepreneurs have the skills they need to compete and win in a global economy," the White House says.
Tonight, Obama will deliver remarks at a fundraiser for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which raises money for Democratic House members and candidates, and will attend a Democratic National Committee event before returning to the White House.
Obama is expected to use the backdrop of the school to argue that lawmakers -- who next week will begin budget negotiations -- should spend money on investments in education to spur the economy, rather than cutting back.
Obama believes the upcoming budget conference "is an opportunity for Washington to focus on building a strong, secure middle class," a White House official said, adding that Obama "will continue to insist that Congress invest in our economy and create good jobs with good wages because we can't just cut our way to prosperity."
The official said Obama will "highlight how investing in schools like P-TECH can help prepare our kids with the skills they need to find a good job."
