Newark Mayor Cory Booker is a heavy favorite to win a U.S. Senate seat as New Jersey voters go to the polls Wednesday.
A Quinnipiac University poll released Tuesday showed Booker ahead 54-40 over Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan.
Booker, a Democrat, would boost the party's Senate majority to 54-46 if elected. He is vying for the seat of Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., who died earlier this year.
Booker stands to benefit Wednesday from a huge gender gap, according to the poll. Women prefer him by 58-36 percent, while men give Booker a 50-45 edge.
The Newark mayor also has overwhelming support in the black community--93-1. Booker, if elected, would become the Senate's only current Democratic African-American senator.
The poll was conducted October 10-14.
