Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid Monday insisted the House of Representatives' effort to dilute the Affordable Care Act simply would not work.
"They're spinning their wheels. We are not going to change Obamacare," he told reporters at an afternoon news conference. "They wanted any changes in Obamacare, wait till after the debt ceiling, wait until they're willing to sit down and do a budget for us, with us and approach this in a reasonable manner."
Reid directed his anger at House Speaker John Boehner. "I have a very simple message to John Boehner. Let the House vote," the Nevada senator said. "Stop trying to force a government shutdown. Let the House work its will, all 435 members, not just a majority. If they brought this bill to the floor with a rule that said everybody can vote on it, it would pass by a large margin.
"It would prevent a government shutdown. If John Boehner blocks this, he will be forcing a government shutdown, and it will be a Republican government shutdown. That's pure and simple."
