WASHINGTON -- Real estate and hospital interests are pouring lots of money into a campaign to re-elect Rep. Dennis Cardoza, D-Merced.
On Friday, the American Hospital Association reported that its political action committee was spending $119,000 on television ads supporting Cardoza. The money comes on top of National Association of Realtors' reports that it had spent $495,000 on Cardoza's behalf over the past week.
The so-called independent expenditures are a remarkable investment on behalf of an incumbent who is not near the top of anyone's list of most vulnerable lawmakers.
Cardoza himself has more than $500,000 stockpiled, his own newly filed statements show.
Cardoza reported raising $249,107 between July 1 and Sept. 30. He had $508,064 available in the campaign treasury prepared to fend off a challenge from Republican Mike Berryhill. Cardoza also reported no campaign debts, as he seeks election to his fifth term representing the 18th Congressional District.
