Sherrod lends support to U.S. Rep. Bishop in Georgia

Shirley Sherrod was hoarse from all the speaking she has done the past few days but that didn't stop her from coming to Columbus, Ga., on Monday to talk in support of U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop.

"We can't let him go," she told a group of approximately 100 Bishop supporters at the Columbus Government Center. "He has worked so hard for the people in the 2nd Congressional District. You can't just go out to vote for him — you have to go out and work for him."

Sherrod was one of a number of speakers supporting Bishop, including retired Gen. Jerry White, former TV newsman Dick McMichael and Muscogee County School Board member Cathy Williams.

Bishop told those gathered that he has done his "dead-level best on behalf of the 2nd Congressional District."

"It has been a labor of love," he said.

This is the 10th congressional race for Bishop.

Sherrod has been in the news lately. She was forced to resign from her job as Georgia State Director of Rural Development for the United States Department of Agriculture after a video clip posted by a blogger made it appear she'd made racist statements at a meeting of the NAACP.
