Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman has put another $20 million of her own money into her campaign, bringing her total investment to a whopping $59 million two months before the primary.
The billionaire former CEO of online auction firm eBay told an audience last week she was prepared to make an "incremental" investment in her campaign.
By March 17, her campaign had spent a total of $46 million, smashing spending records for a self-financed candidate in California. Much of her money went into radio and TV ads that have blanketed the state. She received $10.2 million in contributions last year and another $1.6 million this year. She had about $4.5 million left in cash on hand as of March 17.
Her main rival Steve Poizner, another wealthy former Silicon Valley CEO, has invested about $19 million of his own money in his campaign but had spent only about $3.5 million as of March 17. His outside fundraising has slowed to a trickle, with his campaign receiving $104,031 between Jan. 1 and March 17 of this year.
