Perry accepts Texas GOP invitation to debate Hutchison

Gov. Rick Perry has accepted an invitation from Republicans in Tarrant and Denton counties to debate U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison in their race for the Republican gubernatorial nomination.

"With a 16-year Washington record of supporting record-setting debt, earmarks and bailouts, Sen. Hutchison has some explaining to do," said Perry's spokesman, Mark Miner, in announcing Perry's acceptance.

Jeff Sadosky, a spokesman for the Hutchison campaign, said the invitation is under consideration along with debate offers from other groups.

"We're working with the Denton and Tarrant County parties, and many other groups putting debate plans in place, on dates that work for everyone," Sadosky said.

In a later response, Sadosky added: "Sen. Hutchison looks forward to a number of debates with Rick Perry and looks forward to talking about Perry's tax increases and attacks on private property rights."

A spokeswoman for Republican candidate Debra Medina said the former Wharton County Republican chairwoman would "definitely" want to participate in the debate.

"We're trying to stir the pot," said Medina press secretary Nelda Carrizales Skevington.
