Calling it "pretty dangerous territory" to even do the review, S.C. State Law Enforcement Division Director Reggie Lloyd said today there was no evidence of any crime in four trips made by Gov. Mark Sanford that included visits with an Argentine woman.

Sanford has admitted to an affair with Maria Belen Chapur, an Argentina resident who has confirmed the relationship.

In all, SLED reviewers examined official and personal financial statements relating to four trips and interviewed Sanford on Wednesday, Lloyd said.

There was no evidence of a crime, and Lloyd repeatedly emphasized that the agency's involvement was a review, not a criminal investigation. He said the agency would resist being used for political purposes.

SLED reviewers had access to Sanford's personal financial documents because the governor volunteered them, not because they had any probable cause to request them, Lloyd said.
