Gay marriage supporters prepare for next fight

No sooner had the California Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that voters have the final say on same-sex marriage than gay rights activists vowed to fight Proposition 8 at the ballot box as soon as next year.

Even as traditional marriage proponents praised the wisdom of the court, another initiative battle was beginning.

"I think that this is not over, this decision, because I think they're going to be back," Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger told Jay Leno in an appearance on "The Tonight Show."

"In a year or two, they will be back again with another initiative trying to get it," the governor said. "You know, eventually it's going to be overturned."

While no final decision has been made, gay marriage groups said their members overwhelmingly want to put the question before voters again in 2010.

"The burden is back on us to reach out to the voters of California and trust they will be fair-minded," said Shannon Minter, legal director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights in San Francisco.

"It is absolutely their right to try that," said Frank Schubert, Proposition 8 campaign manager.
