Former Kansas City Mayor Kay Barnes has conceded defeat in her challenge against incumbent Rep. Sam Graves for Missouri’s 6th District congressional seat.
Shortly after 9 p.m., Barnes told The Star that it appeared Graves’ re-election was all but certain. Graves followed up moments later with a victory speech.
“I feel very good about the race we ran,” Barnes said, while thanking her staff for its work. “I certainly have no regrets about engaging in the race. We knew going in it would be an uphill battle.”
Graves, the Republican, was polling 61 percent to Democrat Barnes’ 36 percent, with about a third of the votes counted. Dave Browning, the Libertarian candidate, has 3 percent.
The 6th District covers 26 counties in northwest Missouri, including Clay and Platte counties and a small portion of eastern Jackson County.
