While news that Hurricane Gustav struck the Gulf Coast Monday morning, prompting the cancelation of almost all events at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, another story was brewing.
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who was tapped last Friday as U.S. Sen John McCain's running mate, released a statement announcing her 17-year-old daughter was about five months pregnant.
The surprising news didn't shock local delegates who were on hand for the convention in which McCain will accept the GOP nomination for president on Thursday, and they said it shouldn’t hamper the campaign.
Olathe Rep. Scott Schwab, the Johnson County Party Chair, didn't think the announcement was a big deal because it happens with families across the country.
"You’ll see the character of a mother who is just going to love her daughter through this," he said. "It’s going to be a model of how you overcome that."
Kathy Kist, chair of the Olathe Republican Party, said Palin should not be judged by a decision her daughter made.
"I think we have seen candidates make poor decisions and in that case, had it been the governor herself, we’d be having a different conversation," she said.
