Alaskan voters recently found a surprise in their mail boxes, with a campaign flier announcing: "Frank Murkowski's bad decisions as governor are still haunting Alaska."
The cover shows the former governor's face, and proclaims in large red letters "Murkowski is back!"
Murkowski left office with abysmal popularity ratings in 2006. So what's this have to do with Tuesday's election?
Open the flier and you see a message from Pebble Mine opponents saying that as governor Murkowski changed permitting rules, making it easier to develop mines. It claims voting yes on Ballot Measure 4 Tuesday would "give back the Salmon protection Murkowski took away."
But mining advocates, who want people to vote no on Ballot Measure 4, say the ad is cynical and untrue, and demanded Alaska media refrain from running ads with a similar message.
