Carlos Gutierrez had a serious run-in with gangsters in his native Chihuahua City. Three years ago, when he couldn’t squeeze any more cash out of his food and beverage company to pay extortion, gangsters cut off his legs.
Gutierrez later fled to El Paso, Texas, where he is seeking asylum.
A chance meeting at a mall led Gutierrez to a clinic where he got state-of-the-art prosthetics.
Now Gutierrez is on a 701-mile bicycle ride from El Paso to San Antonio and on to Austin to raise awareness about the plight of Mexican asylum seekers fleeing the brutality of their homeland.
