Last week, I spent a day on a tropical island somewhere in Central America. In one photo, you can see one of the palm-lined roads on the island. Hint: The roads date from a time when U.S. soldiers were living there engaged in a rather surprising activity many decades ago.
Here’s another hint for this occasional series of “Where am I?” – the island has a 5,000-foot grass airstrip. If the airstrip were paved, Boeing 737s would be able to land there. You can bet that some day, that airstrip will be paved and many more people will know about the island.
For now, keep an eye out for my stories for McClatchy this week to see where the island is and what the GIs were doing there. Last hint: There was a famous peripatetic global exile who took brief residence on a nearby isle in 1979.
