Xinhua and Shanghai Daily, both state news sources, confirmed that the family of Qian Yunhui, a village leader who complained that his village had been forced to sell its land for a power plant and then died under the wheel of a construction truck, was paid a remarkable amount of money -- 1.05 million yuan, which is the equivalent of more than $159,000. By way of comparison, the per capita GDP in China is less than $4,000.
