Round-up of Daily Violence in Iraq - Friday 24 September, 2010

The daily Iraq violence report is compiled by McClatchy Newspapers Special Correspondents in Baghdad from police, military and medical reports. This is not a comprehensive list of all violence in Iraq, much of which goes unreported. It's posted without editing as transmitted to McClatchy's Washington Bureau.

Baghdad

Three Katyusha rockets slammed into three different locations at around dawn, Friday; the first hit the river bank near Waziriyah; north Baghdad, the second hit the Green Zone, and no casualties were reported; and the third landed near Layla building in Karrada, injuring one civilian.

A roadside bomb targeted a civilian car on Muhammed al Qassim highway, near Zayuna, east Baghdad, Thursday evening. The car was carrying a civilian, Anmar Taha, his wife, their two children and his two nephews. All four children (under 12) were killed, and Taha and his wife were severely injured. The explosion also injured two civilian pedestrians.

Armed men opened fire at the private car of Lieut. Col. Hazim Salih in Thraa Dijlah area, north Baghdad, late Thursday, killing Salih and severely injuring his wife.

Three mortar rounds slammed into the river bank near the double-decker bridge in central Baghdad, late Thursday, without any casualties or damages.

Nineveh

A suicide bomber wearing an explosive belt ran towards worshippers coming out of Friday prayers in Nebi Sheet Mosque, central Mosul. He was suspected by the police who shot at him and he detonated killing one policeman and injuring another. The explosion also injured one of the worshippers.
