Round-up of Daily Violence in Iraq - Friday 24 August 2007

The daily Iraqi violence report is compiled by McClatchy Newspapers Special Correspondents in Baghdad from police, military and medical reports. This is not a comprehensive list of all violence in Iraq, much of which goes unreported. It’s posted without editing as transmitted to McClatchy’s Washington Bureau.


10 civilians were killed and 20 injured in clashes between the US army and gunmen in the west Baghdad neighborhood of Shoala around 1 a.m., Iraqi police said. Sadrists say that the people killed in the Mahdi Army-controlled neighborhood were civilians and put the death toll at 20 including women and children. The U.S. military said in a press release that after ground troops came under attack helicopters were brought and 18 "enemy combatants were killed". The military later amended the release putting the death toll at only 8. The military said armed men on rooftops were spotted. A military spokesman said no civilians were killed.

An Iraqi soldier was killed and 2 were wounded in an IED explosion that targeted an Iraqi army patrol in Mansour neighborhood west Baghdad at 8,00pm

Police found 9 anonymous bodies in Baghdad today. 7 bodies were found in Karkh, the western side of Baghdad in the following neighborhoods (2 bodies in Saidiyah, 2 bodies in Ghazaliyah, 1 body in Hurriyah, 1 body in Adil and 1 body in Um Al Ma’alif.) 2 bodies were found in Rusafa, the eastern side of Baghdad in the following neighborhoods (1 body in Palestine Street and 1 body in Adhemiyah.)


Gunmen killed a barber named Ghazi Jalal Mohammed. The incident happened yesterday evening inside Hawija town market west Kirkuk.

Gunmen kidnapped a house wife in Ghernata neighborhood downtown Kirkuk yesterday evening.

Police found a body of a civilian in one of the neighborhoods of Hawija town west Kirkuk today morning.
