Roundup of violence in Iraq - 15 February 2007

The daily Iraq violence report is compiled by McClatchy Newspapers Special Correspondent Laith Hammoudi in Baghdad from police, military and medical reports. This is not a comprehensive list of all violence in Iraq, much of which goes unreported. Itís posted without editing as transmitted to McClatchyís Washington Bureau.

Baghdad. The source: MoI operation room

-- 4 civilians were killed and 20 others were wounded in two parked car bombs explosions in Dora neighborhood southern Baghdad. the explosions targeted civilians near one of the main vegetable markets, Alwat al Rasheed, at about 1 pm Baghdad time.

-- An Iraqi army soldier was wounded when a parked car bomb explosion targeted his patrol while passing through Al Jami'aa neighborhood western Baghdad at 2:30 pm.

-- 3 civilians were killed and 25 others were injured when a parked car bomb exploded targeting the bus carrying the civilians near Al Hay Market in Sadr City eastern Baghdad at 4:15 pm.

-- A woman was killed and 3 other civilians were injured including two women when insurgents opened fire with automatic weapons on their mini bus while the bus was on the way to Balad city at 9 am. The woman's body and the injured people were taken to Balad public hospital in Salah al Din province.

-- An Iraqi soldier was shot dead by a sniper in Adhamiya neighborhood eastern Baghdad today afternoon.

-- A police commando was killed when insurgents opened fire on his patrol in Al Amil neighborhood west Baghdad at 6 pm.

-- 20 bodies were found in Baghdad today. 18 bodies were found in Karkh, the west part of Baghdad, in the following neighborhoods: 5 each in Dora and Ghazaliya, 2 each in Yarmouk and Kadhimiya, 1 body each in Mahmoudiya, Hay al Amil, Abo Dsheer and Al Jiefir. Two bodies were found in Rosafa, the east part of Baghdad -- 1 in Jisr Dyala and the other in Bab al Sheikh.

Basra city

-- the spokesman of the MNF in southern Iraq, Katy Brown, said that two British soldiers were injured when their check point was attacked by Katyusha rockets and small arms fire in Al Hussein neighborhood 8KMs west of Basra at 10 am. Twop soldiers were injured, one seriously.

-- An insurgent was killed and another one was injured when a British patrol was attacked with RPG 7 rockets and small arms fire. The British force responded to the fire, killing an insurgent and injuring another.

Diyala province

-- 8 civilians were killed and another 14 injured when gunmen used mortars and automatic weapons to attack Al Gasreen village north of Baqouba. A security source in the city of Khalis said that terrorists groups led by the prince of Qaida Hardan Al Sheb and his assistant Enad Al Awar targeted the village to force its people to leave.

The source said that 4 of the injured civilians are children and 3 are women and they were moved to Baghdad because Baqouba hospital is under the control of the terrorists. It's to be mentioned that a previous attack targeted the same village caused the death of 5 civilians and the injury of 15.

-- A police officer was assassinated and another officer was injured when insurgents shot at their vehicle in downtown Khalis town north of Baqouba city.

-- A military source in Miqdadiya city east of Baquba said that the Iraqi army today killed an insurgent while he was trying to plant a bomb. 3 other bombs were found with the insurgent in addition to some wires. The same source added that another Iraqi army force arrested today three insurgents wanted for terrorist activities. The insurgents were captured near one of the check points in the city.

-- Insurgents assassinated a policeman when they targeted his house in Baladrooz city east of Baqouba city.
