Roundup of Iraq Violence -- March 5, 2007

The Iraq violence report is compiled by McClatchy Newspapers in Baghdad from police, military and medical reports. This is not a comprehensive list of all violence in Iraq, much of which goes unreported. Itís posted without editing as transmitted to McClatchyís Washington Bureau.

Baghdad

-- 9:00 am _ One IED exploded in Dora Junction, south Baghdad, on the highway that leads south, targeting a police patrol. The police car was wrecked, but the policemen were unharmed. However, five pilgrims walking to Karbala, carrying the traditional flags, were in close proximity and were wounded.

-- 10:30 am _ Pilgrims, some walking, others in cars, trucks or minibuses headed for Karbala for the ìFortieth day of mourningî ceremony for the Imam Al-Hussein, Grandson of the Prophet Mohammed, were subject to light gunfire near Jadriya bridge / Al-Karkh, southwest Baghdad. Fire was coming at them from the orchards of Qadisiya, to their left. It caused great alarm and left two pilgrims wounded.

-- 11:00 am _ One IED exploded in Dakhiliya neighborhood, behind UmulTubul Mosque southwest Baghdad, targeting an army patrol. Two servicemen were wounded.

-- 11:15 am _ More pilgrims on foot targeted by gunfire on the Dora Highway, south Baghdad. The fire was coming at them from the orchards of BuAitha, leaving 3 dead and 8 wounded.

-- 12:10 am : A discarded car exploded near Al-Mutanabbi St. and the Baghdad Museum / Al-Risafi Sq., central Baghdad, killing 20 people and wounding 65. This is an old, traditional congregating place of book-lovers from all over the country, and a central marketplace for stationary and school accessories.

-- Al-Shorjah saw light gunfire near the Ameen Junction, near Jumhouriya st. targeting walking pilgrims, leaving 3 wounded.

-- Hay al-Adil _ a discarded car explodes in the junction causing the death of one man and wounding two men and one woman.

-- Police found 15 dead bodies throughout the capital in the following neighborhoods: 6 bodies in Adhamiya, 4 bodies in Yarmouk, 2 bodies in Dora, 2 in Al Adel and one in Al Amil.

Diyala

-- Gunmen attacked an Iraqi army checkpoint in Kanaan town (southeastern Baqouba) on Monday afternoon. A military source said the Iraqi army killed 2 of the attackers and injured 3 and 2 Iraqi soldiers were killed and two were injured.

-- Gunmen killed one man and kidnapped two men in Abu Saida town today afternoon.

-- Four policemen were killed in an ambush in Al Nai town (north of Al Khalis city). The gunmen used two vehicles and fled the place. The security source said these attacks are meant to intimidate the residents who allow their sons and relatives to join police force.

-- In Baqouba city (Diyala province capital) police found a chopped head in a box in one the parks central the city, said a police source.

-- Iraqi police killed two gunmen in central Baqouba today. Police said the gunmen were trying to start an organized attack to rob one of the banks in the city. One day earlier the Iraqi national TV reported that the Iraqi army transported governmental employeesí salaries to the province.
