Roudup of Iraq Violence -- March 7, 2007

The Iraq violence report is compiled by McClatchy Newspapers in Baghdad from police, military and medical reports. This is not a comprehensive list of all violence in Iraq, much of which goes unreported. Itís posted without editing as transmitted to McClatchyís Washington Bureau.

Baghdad

-- Around 8:30 a.m. gunmen attacked Shiite pilgrims marching toward the southern holly city of Karbala to celebrate the 40 days anniversary (Arbainiyah) of Imam Hussein death. The attack took place on Mohammed Al Qassim highway. The attack claimed the life of one pilgrim and two others were injured.

-- Around 9 a.m. gunmen using machine guns attacked the pilgrims in Saidiyah (on Al Jadiriyah Bridge). The attack caused injuries to 8 pilgrims.

SIGN UP

-- Around 10:00 a.m. shooting from Al Mahdia areas and Al Saidiya (southwest Baghdad) targeted the pilgrims, leading to injuries to 6 of them.

-- Around 10:30 Gunmen attacked pilgrims in Waziriyah area. The attackers killed 1 and injured 2.

-- Around 11:00 a.m. a roadside bomb exploded in Al Dora neighborhood targeting the pilgrims. The blast claimed the lives of 7 citizens and injured 23.

-- Around midday a mortar round fell in Saidiyah causing injuries to one policeman.

-- Around 1 p.m. a roadside bomb exploded in Sabaa Abkar area. The bomb killed on civilian.

- Around 4:00 p.m. a suicide car bomb targeted an Iraqi national police patrol in Saidiyah. The Iraqi police members were providing security to Shiite pilgrims in the area. The blast claimed the lives of 10 (including 6 policemen) and caused injuries to 42 (including 20 policemen). The rest of the killed and injured citizens were pilgrims.

-- Police found 10 corpses all over the capital in the following neighborhoods: 3 in Amil, 2 in Baia, 1 in Mansour, 1 in Taji, 2 in Dora and 1 in Saidiyah.

Diyala

-- Around 6 p.m. a bomber wearing an explosive vest blew himself up in a cafe in Baladrouz city. The blast claimed the lives of 32 citizens (including 3 policemen) and injured 34 others, said Dr. Hussein Majmad, the manager of the cityís hospital. The blast targeted the cafe not far away from a Shiite mosque in the city. many young men were preparing to attend a funeral for the anniversary of Imam Hussein.

-- Gunmen killed one man and injured another in central Muqdadiyah today afternoon.

-- Gunmen killed a man in Jurf Al Milah area in Baaqouba today.

-- Gunmen killed a civilian in Khaniqeen city (near the Iraqi-Iranian borders).

Gunmen attacked police in Al Abara town (north of Baaqouba) not far away from the police building. A clash started between the attackers and the police. Due to the clash 2 policemen were injured, police source in Diyala operations room said.

Salah Ad Din

-- A security source said on condition of anonymity that the national security members with cooperation from the health departmentís protection force managed to discover a huge amount of explosives to be used as a bomb against one of the provinceís hospitals today. He said the investigations resulted in identifying the persons who planted the explosives.

Basra

-- British soldiers injured one gunman as he was trying to attack a British military guard post in Al Saee neighborhood central Basra today.
