Roundup of violence in Iraq - 20 January 2007

The daily Iraq violence report is compiled by McClatchy Newspapers Special Correspondent Laith Hammoudi in Baghdad from police, military and medical reports. This is not a comprehensive list of all violence in Iraq, much of which goes unreported. Itís posted without editing as transmitted to McClatchyís Washington Bureau.

1- Baghdad. The source:- MOI operation room

An employee of the Atheer cell phone network company was killed and two of his colleagues were injured when insurgents opened fire on their car in Al Yarmook neighborhood downtown Baghdad at 10 am.

Unknown insurgents killed two women and a man in Madaien south of Baghdad. 3 unidentified bodies were found in Baghdad: 2 bodies were found in Al Amil neighborhood west of Baghdad and 1 body was found in Mahmodiya town south of Baghdad.

6 people were wounded when three mortar shells fell behind Al Farooq mosque in the Silikh neighborhood of downtown Baghdad. Three cars were destroyed in the accident.

2- Dyala province

Security sources in Muqdadiya said that a group of insurgents assassinated Saad Husain Al Shibani, the director of the martyrs and wounded department in Dyala police directorate, in Al Muqdadiya market east of Baquba this afternoon. The same source mentioned that two other civilians were wounded in another accident while two other civilians were wounded in a third accident in Muqdadiya.

The explosions experts of Dyala police directorate and the 5th division of the Iraqi army defused five IEDs in Balad rooz southeast of Baquba and Bani Saad south of Baquba.

A judicial source in Baquba city said that a group of insurgents assassinated this afternoon the general prosecutor in the appeals court of Khalis north of Baquba. The source said that the insurgents stopped the judge near his house and shot him dead.

A security source said a civilian was killed near the housing buildings in Khalis city north of Baquba.

A close source to the Multi-National Forces said that the 5th battalion of the 2nd brigade from the 5th Iraqi army division raided Al Gatoon neighborhood west of Baquba city. The source said that one insurgent was killed and a big cache of weapons was found.

3- Basra

The spokesman of the MNF said that a British military vehicle was damaged by an IED explosion north of Basar city. The spokesman mentioned also that three British bases were attacked with 15 Katyosha rockets; two building were damaged in the attack.

A police source in Basra police directorate said that two unidentified bodies were found in Al Maqal area north of Basar city. The sources explained that the bodies were handcuffed and blindfolded with signs of gunshots.
