Roundup of violence in Iraq - 18 January 2007

The daily Iraq violence report is compiled by McClatchy Newspapers Special Correspondent Mohammed al Awsy in Baghdad from police, military and medical reports. This is not a comprehensive list of all violence in Iraq, much of which goes unreported. Itís posted without editing as transmitted to McClatchyís Washington Bureau.

Baghdad.

-- at 8:30 this morning a car bomb left by the roadside exploded near AL TAHREER square next to AL ORFALY mosque, aimed an Iraqi police patrol. 4 were killed, 2 police and 2 civilians, and 15 were injured, including 2 policemen.

-- at 10:30 this morning 3 car bombs left by the roadside exploded at the same time at al dora fruit and vegetable local market southern Baghdad. 10 civilians were killed and 30 others were injured.

-- at 11:30 this morning a car bomb left by the roadside exploded at the civilians in KAMSARA area south of karada area in the industrial area, killing 3 civilians and injuring 7 others.

-- at 11:15 this morning an IED exploded in al mahmodiyah area southern Baghdad at an Iraqi police patrol, 3 police and 2 civilians were injured.

-- at 3 o'clock this afternoon one mortar fell at abu atsheer area southern Baghdad, one woman was killed and one man was injured .

-- at 4 o'clock this evening one mortar fell at al shamasiyah area in selekh north east Baghdad 4 civilians were killed and 13 others were injured .

-- a car bomb left by the roadside exploded in al rashad area south east Baghdad near the intersection of the main police station. 2 civilians were killed and 4 others were injured.

-- today 27 bodies were found in Baghdad: 1 aour, 1 adhamiyah, 3 new baghad, 1 shaab, 1 karada, 2 shula, 1 jihad, 1 haifa street, 7 in different parts of dora, 5 amil, 3 saidiyah and 1 bayaa. some were tortured and handcuffed .

Basra province .

-- last night in basra 2 unknown gunmen were injured in clashes with the British forces and one British soldier was injured in a rocket attack at the British consulate in basra city -- today in basra an Iraqi clerics group from the south was established and declared , this was done in a conference held in AL ABAIACHI mosque in basra and was attended by all the clerics of the MARJAAIAH for both sunni and shiite in basra. sheikh khaled al Mula said that this iraqi clerics group consists of more than 500 sunni clerics from all over iraq and this group was established after having many meetings and negotiations between the sunni clerics to establish this group.

he also said that we want to make basra as a starting point for all the sects to live together in peace. also added that this basra group is a branch, others are in MOSUL , RAMADI , FALLUJA , DIYALA and BAGHDAD. basra will be the starting point of this group , also said that there are sunni clerics who dodn't want their names to be known because they might be targeted .

DIYALA province .

-- according to a medical source from diyala health directorate, the MNF have found 5 dead bodies of terrorists who were killed in AL DAINIYAH area south of BALADROIS area 45 km east of baqouba.

-- according to the morgue of baqouba hospital, 4 bodies were received by the morgue today .

-- according to a police source from muqdadiyah police, 4 women and a child were injured when unknown terrorist attacked the health centre in TAWAKAL village east of baqouba.
