After leading the Bureau of Economic Analysis for almost 20 years, director Steven Landefeld announced his retirement Monday.
Landefeld turns 65 later this month, and decided it was time to retire, effective May 2. The agency, part of the Commerce Department, will be run after that by Deputy Director Brian Moyer while a search for a replacement begins.
In a statement, the BEA said Landefeld plans to teach economics at his alma mater, the University of Maryland. He’s run the BEA, which produces among other things the quarterly reports on gross domestic product, since May 1995.
During his long tenure, Landefeld led efforts to improve inflation data collection and adapted government statistics to capture the shift towards international trade, globalization, the digital economy and other wrinkles in an ever-changing economy.
