Billy Cooper of Latimer plans to bring in the new year with a bang.
Cooper, who runs a seasonal fireworks shop in Woolmarket, said New Year’s Eve is generally the most profitable day of the season for his family’s business.
Right now, hundreds of packages of firecrackers, sparklers and explosives sit idle at Coast Fireworks on Old Mississippi 67. Cooper said business has been slow since opening on December 15.
“It’ll be picking up for New Year’s,” he said.
“It doesn’t really get busy until the 30th and 31st,” said Darcel Page of Saucier who works at Lawler’s Discount Fireworks off of U.S. 49 north of Mississippi 53.
Lawler’s Fireworks opened its doors for the season on Friday. By Monday afternoon, the shelves still were fully stocked, but Page said most will be purchased on New Year’s Eve.
“That’s usually when people buy them -- last minute,” Page said.
On New Year’s Eve, she anticipates the line at the cash register to wrap around the store.
