BELLEVILLE -- A tie vote will force the Belle Valley School District 119 school board to revisit the issue of buying hams for all the district's employees for the holidays -- an issue that caused a shouting match among board members at a special meeting Wednesday night.
"We all realize we're under budget constraints. ... That's why we're voting on this issue this evening," Board President Karen Kunz told the board during its heated discussion on whether to spend up to $2,300 on the holiday hams for more than 80 employees. "I'm trying to keep this meeting running in an orderly fashion. That's all it is."
Kunz and board members Roberta Barth and Lester Byrd voted against purchasing the hams, while Rebecca Skillern, John Dumbroski and Renea Daesch voted for the purchases. Theresa Collins did not submit a vote after leaving the board room in response to Byrd calling her "a joke," warranting gasps from several other board members.
