The leading manufacturer of those next-generation lights is a Durham company.
Cree is one of the world's top manufacturers of light emitting diodes, or LED lights. The glowing semiconductors are already used in mobile phones, computer monitors, parking lots, street lights and other industrial applications.
In its next commercial phase, the LED will become adopted for household use in the next several years, experts believe, which will further boost Cree's output.
