New legislation is circulating through Congress that would allow freight trucks to be 17,000 pounds heavier than they are now.
Opponents of the bill argue heavier trucks pose higher safety risks, but supporters disagree with that argument.
In a poll by AAA of more than 3,000 members across Southern Illinois, Missouri, and parts of Kansas and Indiana, more than 90 percent disagreed with the possibility of permitting heavier trucks on interstate highways.
